But apparently, this is ‘old fashioned thinking'; I think this is actually the exact message we are missing in our world today – men ARE meant to protect, they ARE created for it! After all, every man has an instinct for it, look at the way so many boys treats their mother.
Of course, there are always outliers – and unfortunately, there are so many more outliers today than there ever were in the past because that damaged bit of our gene pool has not been removed. It used to be that the damaged ones, the ones who carried the wrong genetic codes, would die either by being killed, or naturally.
Guys get into fist fights, than usually wind up taking one another for a beer afterwards. They enjoy feeling needed, whether it's reaching something the person they love can't for them, or getting rid of a spider for them. The need to protect those they love is so apparent in all the men I know in my life, but by actually showing it – opening a door, grabbing most of the groceries out of the car to bring in – apparently they are being evil, rude, and disrespectful.
Now, if the guy were demanding that the woman stand there and look pretty because she is INCAPABLE of doing any of those things, if he were refusing to admit that she could open that door herself – that would not be good and he would deserve a swift smack upside the head to try and knock some sense into them – but generally, guys don't tend to do that. They in general want to protect, and keep safe all those they love – especially their partners and children.
So why are we killing that instinct, and why when we support it are we told that we are ‘part of the problem'?
